Iga Swiatek: The tennis player from Poland with a lot of power
Iga Swiatek was born on May 31, 2001 in Warsaw. She comes from a very sports-loving family. Her father Tomasz was a rower in the Polish quadruple sculls at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Iga started playing tennis because she wanted to beat her older sister. Today she is the first Polish tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament. She triumphed at the French Open in 2020.
Swiatek tries to hit the ball as early as possible in the ascent and has all the trump cards in her hand with her high hitting speed, excellent footwork and tactical skill. Her calm demeanor and composure even in pressure situations are remarkable. Working with a sports psychologist is obviously paying off. She prefers to play on clay courts. Iga Switek is very popular among tennis fans. In 2020 she received the "WTA Fan Favorite Singles Player of the Year" award.
Triumph at the French Open 2020
Iga Swiatek celebrated her first major triumphs as a junior, winning the junior doubles at the French Open and the junior singles title at Wimbledon in 2018 together with Catherine McNally. In the same year, she made her debut for the Polish Fed Cup team in the win against Turkey.
She achieved her greatest successes in 2020. At the Australian Open, she reached the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament and at the US Open, the third round. At the French Open, she defeated top seed Simona Halep 6-1 and 6-2 in the round of 16, moved into her first Grand Slam final without losing a set and finally defeated Sofia Kenin in two sets.
Iga Swiatek's playing style is offensive and variable
The 1.76 meter tall Iga Swiatek plays a very aggressive and variable style of tennis. Due to her very offensive style of play, she scores many direct points, but she also makes many avoidable mistakes. She describes her game tactics on clay as a combination of her strong serve, forehand topspin and longline backhand. She prepares her points carefully and also has the patience to wait for the right opportunity and hit the winner at the right moment.
Both her forehand and her two-handed backhand have a lot of power. She plays her forehand with an extreme western grip and a lot of topspin. During Iga Swiatek's Roland Garros triumph in 2020, her average forehand speed was 118 km/h - significantly more than all other players. Her backhand speed is also exceptionally high. She reached a peak of 122 km/h at the 2020 French Open, which is again the top value of all players and roughly the same as Dominic Thiem's backhand speed, who has the fastest backhand among male tennis professionals.
Swiatek often goes for the net and, thanks to her experience in doubles, also plays an excellent volley. Her first serve reaches a maximum speed of 183 km/h and an average speed of 166 km/h. With this very powerful serve, she can dictate the rally from the start and she usually succeeds in winning her own service games.
Iga Swiatek wins “Shot of the Year 2019”
Iga Swiatek skillfully varies between a kick serve and a slice serve, both of which are also used as second serves. She likes to play a drop shot and other spectacular shots that surprise her opponent. Incidentally, she received the WTA Tour's "Shot of the Year 2019" award for an impressive cross-court drop shot from the baseline.
